When I was younger, I wanted to be a dancer and a writer. We didn’t have the means to afford dance classes so I couldn’t study dance. Because we didn’t have the means to afford dance class, I decided I needed a career where I would have the means to afford dance class—or whatever. So I didn’t become a writer either (because how do you make money writing, am I right??).
With an interest in computers, I decided at 12 years old (~age in photo) that I would become a computer engineer. Because…they made money. Duh.
So me—and all my first gen-er insecurities—went to college and studied electrical engineering with a concentration in computer engineering. Because…I said I would.
Then I went to Wall Street. Then business school. Then gaming.
I’ve spent my entire academic and professional career in traditionally male-dominated pursuits. I’m a perpetual “FOD”—First, Only, Different (in Shonda Rhimes parlance). Not easy. But worth it.
What keeps me going? This one (<–). And others who look like her. Because I didn’t (don’t) see many people who look like me doing what I did (do). I want that to be different for her. And others. #representationmatters
So, on this International Women’s Day, I’m keenly aware of the opportunity I have to #breakthebias. It’s part of my life’s work.
Also…
I’m keenly aware…that this pic is awesomely hilarious. That it’s true blackmail material. And that…I totally took you on a trip down memory lane with the pose, posters, and (side) ponytail (and, if I didn’t, you don’t have a soul). You’re welcome.
