My first visit to Cape May was 13 years ago. It was after a hectic stretch on a new job and I needed a few days of downtime to rest and rejuvenate (according to an archived email circa May 2007). Fast forward and here we are. Deja vu much?
After a dynamic first 90 days at the new gig–intensified by the pandemic and an unfruitful housing search–I packed up the brood and headed south. We rented a house close to downtown and spent 3 days/4 nights lounging and socially-distanced exploring Cape May.
It was just what the doctor ordered. A few days off. A few (uninterrupted) days with the family. And a few days in the place where I first nurtured my nascent, hospitality-focused, enterprise-building visions.
Though brief, my time in Cape May–recognized as America’s oldest seaside resort–served its purpose…and then some. I decompressed from work. I took a hiatus from thinking about my housing woes (ok, not entirely; but I didn’t refresh Redfin my usual 47x a day). I spent quality time with the family. Unexpectedly, I reconnected with dreams of yore. And, I tapped into my “why.” ALL of the “whys”. Why I do what I do for my nuclear family, my extended family, my dreams, and my ancestor’s wildest dreams.
So thanks to the beach, our amazing VRBO house & hostess, the good people at Congress Hall, Willow Creek Winery, the Cape May Zoo, and various retail & culinary delights (Exit Zero, Mad Batter, Tisha’s, Whale’s Tale, & Peace Pie), my few days in Cape May were what my family–and my soul–needed.
Next up: preparing for 2021.
