Look at that. It’s not February yet. Every now and then, I can even surprise myself.
I love pictures.
Always have.
In junior high school, I owned no fewer than 3 cameras.
In high school, I walked around with a 35mm. Not digital, my friend (see previous posts re: my age). I actually had to purchase film. And develop it. Not cheap (esp for a girl from the hood). But, I loved pictures. I loved capturing moments. I saw my camera as an alternate way to tell a story; not using words but pictures. And that’s what I loved (love) to do…tell stories…
Story
In high school (and junior high school…and elementary school…), I loved writing. I remember telling my dad that I loved writing. Here’s a glimpse (ok, a paraphrase) of that conversation:
Dad: What do you want to be when you grow up, sweetheart?
Me: A writer.
Dad: Babygirl, writers don’t make money. Choose something else. What else do you like?
Me: Well, I like computers. I’d like to figure out how they’re made. That’s it—I want to be a computer engineer.
Dad: Ok, Babygirl. You can do it. You can do anything you put your mind to. But…I want you to know that there aren’t many women engineers. In fact, most engineers are…
End Story.
(for your own good and my own…that’s another blog entry)
The purpose of that randomness was to illustrate one thing: I like telling stories. By word. Or by picture.
So, for my 35th birthday, I decided that I was going to reconnect with that passion…for pictures. The Husband blessed me with a Nikon D5100. Aaannnnd…I’m starting a photography class at a local college the first week in February to help me learn all about the features of a DSLR and the basics of amateur photography; can’t wait!
Another Story
A question on which I like to reflect every now and then is this:
“If money wasn’t an issue and you could do anything in the world, what would that be?”
The answer to that question is likely diametrically opposed to my education and professional pursuits to date (an engineering major, former IT geek, turned HR fluff ball, MBA, turned marketer, who can write, present, AND exhibit compassion AND emotions. Whoa; mutant territory for real).
If money wasn’t an issue, among other things, I would:
- Write
- Study photography
End Story.
Dude. The manual (of life) says nothing about all of this tomfoolery. Writing? Photography? I’m supposed to be content with being on “the path”…to becoming a captain of industry…
Speaking of manuals. You know what else the manual doesn’t say?
It doesn’t quite tell me how to figure out this depth of field stuff, either. Can’t wait for my first class on February 2nd.

You are going to have a blast! I love photography though I’ve never taken a class. It’s on my list of to dos. 😉 Have fun with the new camera.
