Top Ten Reasons Why We Procrastinate
- Desire for attention (not enough recognition for completing the task)
- Fear (of change, criticism, failure, inadequacy, rejection, mistakes, the unknown)
- Feeling overwhelmed (too much to do so you shut down and don’t do anything)
- Indecisiveness
- Lack of deadline
- Over-commitment (need to learn how to use the words “yes” and “no” effectively)
- Resentment (disappointment at what you’re asked to do)
- Unclear goals
- Unpleasant or boring tasks
- Distractions (can you say “Facebook”!?)
Furthermore…
-
Procrastination is a symptom of some form of stress in your life
- You won’t stop doing it until you figure out why you’re doing it
I haven’t met anyone—leader or lay person—who hasn’t admitted to some form of procrastination in their life. Therefore, I thought this was worth sharing (courtesy of New Year’s Eve sermon *smile*).
As I reflect on my time at Darden thus far and prepare for my last five months in business school, I am examining the following questions:
- What personal goals have I not yet accomplished in my business school career?
- What relational goals have I not yet accomplished in my business school career?
- What professor(s) have I not engaged but should have?
- Have I executed on the vision I set for myself in the beginning of this journey?
- Have I fully utilized the resources before me?
- Am I making the most out of this season?
From me, to you, Happy New Year.
(Oh, sure, sure…of course this isn’t for YOU; you mastered this last year. Obvi, duh! Just pass this on to a friend, then, if you feel moved.).
