Legacy

There are leaders, visionaries, champions, and advocates.

And then, there are the Freys.

Professor Sherwood Frey and his wife Marietta have been long time mentors, friends, and advocates for African-American students at Darden. For more than 30 years, they have demonstrated their commitment to diversity and to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all. Through their tireless support, they have positively impacted the lives of countless students. Therefore, it’s only fitting that something was done to honor the legacy of the Freys.

In 2008, a scholarship “was established not only to honor Professor Frey and his wife, Marietta, but also to provide financial support to students, who, as a result of the opportunities afforded them by their education at the Darden School, show promise and commitment to being role models for future generations of African-American leaders.” (see original article announcing the scholarship)

The first recipient of the scholarship was Michael Peters, D’09. Peters, former president of BBSF (Black Business Student Forum) and “Mayor of Darden” (my name for him, not his) was an active leader in the Darden community and a natural champion for diversity. He was certainly a role model, a mentor, a friend to me, and an instrumental part of my Darden experience. His passion for helping others was genuine and, in my opinion, he was truly deserving of the award.

So, imagine my surprise when I was named this year’s Marietta and Sherwood Frey Scholar! I am both grateful and humbled by the selection. I feel fortunate to be associated with their legacy and it’s my goal to continue exemplifying similar ideals here at Darden and beyond.

Some believe you’re only as good as the company you keep. If present company is any indication, then I consider myself extremely blessed.
